Is It Time for a Sump Pump?

October 17, 2017 by Vincent Knisley

Every person living in the central Pennsylvania areas including Harrisburg, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg and Hershey are discovering that springtime can sometimes mean soggy weather. Recently, we’ve had a few weeks of virtually uninterrupted rain, and that’s leading many homeowners to realize that their “dry” basements aren’t so dry after all. If you’ve recently uncovered moisture in your basement area, it may be time to think about a sump pump.

What a Sump Pump Does

Sump pumps remove any water leaking into your basement before it ruins your foundation, walls, floors, furniture, etc. A trench may be created around the edges of the basement, and groundwater ends up in the trench. The trench empties into a sump pump, which then pumps the water back outside via a pipe. Sometimes, a trench is not needed if natural water migration patterns allow the water to flow into the sump pit area around the sump pump. Sump pumps are highly effective, and carry many benefits.

The Advantages of Sump Pumps

If you’re new to having a sump pump, you may be interested in the advantages that come with this investment. They include:

  • Being able to use your basement space for practical purposes, rather than having to avoid a damp, musty basement.
  • Not having a build-up of mold-fostering moisture in your basement. In other words, there’s no nasty, mildew smell coming from your downstairs!
  • Saving your property from water damage. Water is highly damaging and rots away wood and other substances in its path.
  • Not worrying that you’ll come down to your basement and find an “indoor pond” one day.
  • Being able to attract future homebuyers who are interested in purchasing a property that has a dry, usable basement (even if it’s just for storage purposes.)

Sump Pump – DIY Project?

Unless you have a wealth of training in sump pump installation, this isn’t generally considered a do-it-yourself project. Not only are you unlikely to have the right equipment for the job, but if you make any errors, they could be very costly to fix. The better choice is to hire plumbing technicians like those at Pronto Plumbing to install your sump pump.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Eventually, the rain will go away, leading to clear, sunny skies. But we all know that it’s bound to return again. If you have a working, reliable, energy-efficient sump pump in your basement, you’ll be able to reduce some of the stress of torrential downpours.
