Can You Mix and Match HVAC Equipment?

Do-it-yourself work can be a great way to save on labor when repairing your HVAC unit. Especially if you are familiar with the unit/piece you are repairing. But perhaps the worst thing you could do when repairing something in your home, is to walk into the situation uninformed.
One of the most frequently asked questions in DIY HVAC repair projects, is “can I mix and match HVAC equipment from different brands? The answer is yes, in some cases. But you have to be very careful and make sure all the components you are mixing are compatible.
It’s usually advised to not mix and match. You wouldn’t put a Lexus motor in a Mercedes. Brands usually tailor their components to fit their pieces only, so that you have to buy from them when it comes time to a repair. You may find another piece that technically works, but is it meant to work with that unit? And is it meant to last?
If you are uncertain about a repair, don’t assume and risk injuring yourself or damaging the unit entirely; consult a professional.
