All about Mold and Mildew

June 6, 2023 by hls_admin

You know you don’t want mold and mildew in your home, but how much do you know about these dastardly substances?

To help you gain a better understanding of mold and mildew, we’ve put together a quick primer on the subjects.

ABOUT MOLD:

Although we tend to use the word “mold” as if it were one kind of fungus, there are different types of mold such as green, black, orange and more. Their textures range from wet and slimy, to dryish and fuzzy. Mold is a naturally occurring fungus, but when it’s inside a home, it can cause decay and damage. It can also lead to respiratory and topical problems for humans and pets. In general, if the humidity level of a house is kept below 60 percent, mold spores (even if they make contact with a wet spot) cannot grow. Cleaning tiny areas of mold is a job that can be handled by homeowners; however, larger areas of mold should ideally be tackled by professionals.

ABOUT MILDEW:

bathroom sinkMildew is a type of mold that is flat (such as that found on shower curtains in bathrooms.) Mildew is found on any areas where moisture collects, although it’s usually found in areas that have humidity of 90 percent or above. (Again, your bathroom is probably the place where you’re most likely to find mildew.) If you smell a “musty” odor in wet areas of your home, it’s likely to be mildew or another form of mold.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO KEEP MOLD AND MILDEW AT BAY?

Obviously, it’s important for your home to be free from mold and mildew. The best way to ensure that this is the case is to have proper ventilation and humidity levels throughout your property. Doing so will reduce the likelihood that mold or mildew can grow. Consequently, your home will be cleaner, healthier and more beautiful.

Worried about mold and/or mildew? Call us today and we’ll help you create the perfect atmosphere to keep these yucky substances from invading your space.
