Repairing Vs. Replacing Your Furnace

October 16, 2013 by cmpdigital

Should you Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

No heat in homeIt’s a cold, blustery winter morning and you wake up hoping to be comfortable and warm in your home. Though the reality is that now you’ve realized the furnace isn’t on, and it’s dipping into the low 50’s (or lower) inside your home. You turn the thermostat up in hopes that maybe it just needs to kick on at a higher temperature, but no luck. You now realize that your aging furnace has finally broken down and it’s time to call a furnace repairman.

Should you repair or replace your furnaceYou knew this day was coming, but you kept pushing it into the future and you aren’t sure you’re ready to completely replace the furnace. Maybe you’ll just get the repair this time and see how long it lasts… But what is the actual investment difference between fixing your older, inefficient furnace or getting a newer more efficient model? Let’s weigh the options of repairing or replacing your aging furnace.

The first thing to look at is the age of your furnace. If your furnace is more than 15 years old it has probably been replaced with more efficient and advanced models. Just the improvements in the fuel burning efficiency of the newer furnaces available could actually be worth the savings you would experience from replacing your old furnace. Your older furnace may also be corroding from age or functioning improperly, and beginning to fail which can lead to a dangerous carbon monoxide situation in your home, or loss of heat!

Next Let’s look at the warranty and parts required for the repair of your furnace. If your furnace is out of the warranty period provided by the manufacturer or your heating company, your repair costs could be considerably more. The money that you have to put down today to pay the repair could be used toward a new furnace that is covered under warranty. Plus after you pay for the current repair, there is no guarantee that something else on the furnace won’t need service soon. A new furnace would reduce the costs of repairs and breakdowns.

15 Year Old Gas FurnaceThe last thing we will look at is your recent gas bills. Take out some of your more recent gas bills as well as some older ones (if you have them saved). If you have an aging furnace that is out of warranty, and you’ve noticed that your gas bills are more expensive lately, but the cost of your natural gas hasn’t gone up, or hasn’t gone up considerably, you might be burning more fuel than you need to with an older inefficient furnace. A newer furnace will burn more efficiently and it can help you cut down the costs of your monthly gas bill.

A furnace replacement isn’t always the only option though. Repairs can be made and it can run for a long time without problems again. But just keep in mind that the time to replace your furnace is always on the horizon and when it arrives you need to be able to weigh the options you have.

We understand it’s a big investment for you and your home. That’s why we offer you the best options for efficiency and energy savings possible, and we pair it up with our Fast, Easy Financing to help make living comfortably easier for you!

If you need furnace repair or are interested in switching to a more efficient furnace call us TODAY at 717.254.4555 and we’ll help you determine what would work best for you and your home.
