Ducted Vs. Ductless Systems: Which Should You Choose?

Ductless and Ducted Systems will serve as both the heating and cooling units for your home, so in that essence, they are similar. But which system will work best for your space and what are the main differences?

Ducted Systems

Ducted systems feature sheet metal ducts placed inside the walls and ceilings of your home.

Why You Would Choose It

  • If your home already has existing ductwork in good condition, this is the quicker and less expensive option.
  • If you’re worried about humidity, ducted systems remove moisture more effectively as the ductless system’s air handlers lack the mechanisms to remove excessive moisture from the air.
  • Ducted systems allow for better air circulation and airflow (if you have a larger home or lots of vaulted ceilings, this is the better option).
  • Ducted systems are actually less maintenance, as it contains fewer components.
  • If you’re worried about your home’s aesthetic, ducted systems remove the worry of unsightly boxes or controls.

Ductless Systems

Ductless systems (also referred to as a ductless mini-split) send refrigerant directly to multiple, small air handlers (blowers) that are installed throughout your home. They look like small boxes that are installed on either the ceilings or the walls in each room.

Why You Would Choose It

  • If your home lacks the space for ductwork, ductless is the best option for you. This is ideal for smaller city homes and apartments or older or historic homes with high ceilings and detailing that would be lost making room for ductwork.
  • If you want to decrease dust in your home (severe allergy sufferers), this is a better option because there is no forced air travelling through the space.
  • If you want zone control (different temperatures in each room), this is easily achieved with a ductless system. (It should be noted that some newer ducted systems also offer zone control, ask a professional about which system would be best for you if you are uncertain).
